Jamal
and Roy nominated for top award
|
The
announcements were made in New York by the National
Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS),
and the awards will be presented at a black tie
ceremony to be held on Monday, September 24 which
will be attended by more than 1000 television
and new media industry executives, news and documentary
producers and journalists.
THE
JOURNALIST AND THE JIHADI: THE MURDER OF DANIEL
PEARL is a 79 minute documentary screened on HBO
which tracks the comparable lives of the passionate
journalist and British-born jihadi Omar Sheikh,
a shrewd terrorist who set Pearl up for slaughter.
Through archival footage, interviews with Pearl's
wife, Marianne and his family and friends and
insights from acquaintances of both men, the film
follows the parallel course of their lives: from
their early years in California and London, to
the defining event that led to radically divergent
career paths and their final, fatal encounter
in Pakistan in 2002 that ended in Pearl's horrific
murder.
Jamal
and Roy had wanted to make a film about why Omar
Sheikh, an educated Briton, had become a jihadi,
and his tactic of kidnapping westerners, first
in 1994, and again in 1999, when he was freed
in exchange of lives of hostages following the
hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC814. Meanwhile,
in Delhi in 2002, independent producer, Ramesh
Sharma, was also interested in the same subject
and the two parties decided to work together.
THE
JOURNALIST AND THE JIHADI: THE MURDER OF DANIEL
PEARL, had its World Premiere at Tribeca Film
Festival, in April 2006 and was shown on HBO Channel
on 10 October 06.
This
is the second collaboration between Jamal and
Roy, who earlier worked together on Dead Man Talking,
a factual documentary made for Channel 4 following
a murder investigation by Hampshire police conducted
over three years. The documentary was pick
of the week in all the national papers &

On
the night of 27th Sept. 2003, Nabeel Siddiqui,
24, a recent graduate of New Jersey Institute
of Technology (NJIT), was brutally and mercilessly
beaten with a baseball bat by three individuals,
in the township of Orange, NJ. This attack had
left him fighting for his life due to severe
brain damage. He was in an extremely critical
condition at UMDNJs Surgical Intensive
Care Unit. Unfortunately, Nabeel Siddiqui passed
away at 4:46pm on Oct. 6th, 2003.The Essex County
(NEWARK) Prosecutor's Office yesterday added
felony murder to the charges against three teenagers
held in the Sept. 27 beating of an Orange pizza
deliverer who died Monday from his injuries.
Acting Prosecutor Paula Dow said her office
was filing a motion to have the three juveniles
-- two 16-year-olds from Orange and a 17-year-old
from Woodbridge -- tried as adults in the slaying
of Nabeel Siddiqui.A petition has been created
to enact this, to add your signature to the
petition click the below link:www.petitiononline.com/nabeels/petitionSiddiqui,
a 24-year-old Pakistani immigrant who graduated
from NJIT in May, was beaten with a baseball
bat after the teens allegedly lured him to a
quiet Orange street with a bogus pizza order.
He died Monday in University Hospital in Newark.
The teenagers, who are being held in the Essex
County Juvenile Detention Centre, originally
were charged with aggravated assault, robbery,
weapons possession and carjacking. Police said
the motive for the beating was the theft of
Siddiqui's 1995 Nissan Altima, according to
sources.Siddiqui's friends and family, including
his mother, who made a 20-hour, $2,500 flight
here from Karachi, Pakistan, on Saturday, remain
devastated over their loss. "We are very
sad," said Asim Khan of Westchester, N.Y.,
Siddiqui's uncle. "His mother is obviously
shattered." Siddiqui, who graduated with
a bachelor of science degree in computer science,
only took the part-time pizza delivery job while
he searched for a permanent job here in his
chosen career field, so he could earn enough
to help his financially strapped parents and
bring them to America to live with him, Nabeel's
funeral arrangements are pending his family
finding an airline to transport the body back
to Karachi today, Khan said.
