Review & Results of The Islamaphobia Awards 2003 in London, UK.

You’ve had the Oscars, the MTV awards and even the TV Soap awards. However none could compete with the first ever Islamaphobia Awards held at the glamorous surroundings of the Islamic Centre in Maida Vale, London. UK.

A host of big names from the world of politics, media and show business were for their hard work and contribution to spreading ignorance and prejudice.

Funnily enough, the red carpet in the foyet was strangely unused by many of the nominees who were happy to spout their views about subjects they know nothing about but were less forthcoming when it came to adding another award to their mantlepieces. Was it modesty? Naaaah.

Well they missed out on a mouthwatering menu of chicken legs, chicken korma, lamb korma, vegetables, pilau rice & naan, not to mention ras malai for desert.

The awards ceremony was presented by hosts, Nazim Ali and Romana Majid and the entertainment was kicked off with rappers, Mecca to Medina with the Islam Rap.

The surprise of the night was when the Labour Party streamed ahead of both the Tories and the BNP with nominations for Most Islamaphobic British Politician David Blunkett and Media Persoanility, Robert Kilroy Silk, former Labour MP turned Oprah Winfrey wannabe. The BNP have been pulling their socks up to keep their position as most extreme right wing party in the UK.

The first award was to the most Islamaphobic British Politician of the year.

Nominees were:

  • Nick Griffen – Leader of the BNP
  • David Blunkett – British Home Secretary
  • William Hague – Former Leader of the Opposition (Tory Party)
  • Andrew Dismore

The two joint winners were: Nick Griffen & David Blunkett

The most Islamaphobic International Politician of the year nominees were:

  • Ariel Sharon - Israeli Prime Minister
  • Vladimir Putin – Russian Prime Minister
  • Silvio Berluscass – Italian Prime Minister
  • Praveen Togadia

The winner was Ariel Sharon.

The most Islamaphobic Media personality of the nominees were:

  • Melanie Philips – Daily Mail columnist
  • Robert Kilroy-Silk – BBC presenter / Daily Express
  • Polly Toynbee – Guardian Columnist
  • Nicky Campbell – BBC 5 Radio Presenter

The winner was Melanie Philips.

The Most Islamaphobic English Speaking Press nominees were:

  • Daily Mail
  • Daily Telegraph
  • The Sun
  • Fox News

The winner was Fox News.

The final award was presented to the most Islamaphobic person

  • Franklin Graham
  • John Ashcroft – US Attorney General
  • Donald Romsield – US Secretary Defence
  • George Bush Jnr – President of the USA

The winner was...... George Bush.

Hence came the end of the First Islamaphobia awards. While everybody had a good laugh, we were all acutely aware that the fun and games held a serious message. As the chairman of the IHRC, Massoud Shadjareh, concluded the ceremony, "…. as long as Islamaphobia exists, these awards will be presented, and the relevant media will be brought to attention." Even though it was a great night, I hope we don’t need to have the awards night next year.
