Guide
to Writing Articles - www.asiancommunity.net
As the name suggests,
www.asiancommunity.net is an informative site for the Asian
Community aged 17 to 65 years old. This ethos is reflected
in the articles on the site.
We welcome articles
from new writers from different backgrounds. Experience is
not necessary, but a sense of humour and enthusiasm is.
If you want to write
for the site, here are some guidelines for you to follow.
- Keep it short
and sweet.
People get put off when there is tonnes of text on the screen
because not
only does it do your eyes in, but there is also more chance
of you getting
caught surfing when you should be working.
Main articles for
most sections should be around 350 to 400 words maximum.
However, features for the Asian Man and Asian Woman sections
can be 650
words long. If you want it to be longer, this should be
discussed with the
content director beforehand.
- Think pictures
Pictures are what brings an article to life and makes people
want to read on. Don't be put off because piccies are normally
quite easy to get. For example, beauty companies and record
companies are happy to send free photos and so can most
large organisations and charities. Ask for the company press
office, they will be happy to help.
- Keep it simple
Keep in mind that we are trying to entertain the reader.
Try and make your
articles interesting and fun. Articles also work best if
you keep it simple.
- Treat serious
issues seriously
Although the main style of the website is to be fun and
witty, if you are writing about a serious issue, treat it
seriously. Jokes and puns are only funny if they are appropriate
and making cheeky remarks during an article about domestic
violence for example will not go down well with readers.
- Use examples
Sometimes articles can be livened up and made more topical
if you use examples from real life to illustrate a point.
Ways to do this can be by referring to a storyline in a
film or television programme, using a celebrity as an example
or an issue that has been in the news.
- Try to get quotes
Always try and get quotes from people. It always livens
an article up and makes the article seem more genuine.
- Are you interested
in what you are writing?
Pick an idea that interests you. If you enjoy writing the
article it shows and people will enjoy reading it.
