CHAK DE INDIA
Jo nahin ho sakta hai, wahi to karna hai...

Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) knows what it's like to come back from the dead. The ex Indian Captain has now come back in the avatar of the Coach of the Indian Women's National Hockey team. A team that exists more on paper and less in reality.

The team is a rag-tag bunch of girls with their own agenda. A bunch of girls who have forgotten what it is like to play for the love of the game. Of playing because you want glory for your country. Not because you want a pensioned job or a government flat. They have all forgotten the sharp thrill of just holding the hockey stick, keeping their eyes on the ball and playing for all they are worth. They have played every game but hockey to make sure they get selected every year in the Indian National team. But what does it really mean to play for the Indian National team? To play for India?

Mujhe sirf ek mulk ka naam sunaai deta hai - India

The girls have never known the thrilling energy of being Team India. Of giving their all to see their country's name on a trophy. But Kabir Khan, once a captain, now forgotten, does. He knows what it takes to get there. And what it means to return empty handed. This time, he wants to make sure that it's different. He knows there are no second chances. Despite his past, he believes that if only the girls played as one, anything would be possible.

Because Kabir Khan believes that it is not that we can't win. It's just that we have never believed we can.

Chak De India is the story of a coach's fight of making his team, Team India by overcoming their diverse backgrounds, by learning to use everything that life hurls on them as a secret weapon. It's a story about honesty, sincerity and integrity. A story to remind the nation of its National sport.

Ghandi My Father
Gandhi My Father is a powerful study of the nature and sufferings of the patriarchal relationship between Gandhi and his unfortunate eldest son Harilal. The film’s UK and international release aptly coincides with the current international and UK domestic climate of Gandhism, as India celebrates 60 years of Independence from British rule, and the teaching of Gandhi and his principles is placed back on the national curriculum in British schools.

Tushar Gandhi joined director Feroz Abbas Khan, producer Anil Kapoor and lead actor Akshaye Khanna at the London location to endorse and support the biggest film to emerge from Indian cinema this year that so profoundly explores, for the first time ever, the personal tragedy behind one of the world’s greatest men.

Writer and advocate of the principles of his great-grandfather, Tushar Gandhi arrived in London to show his heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for the film, which has already received huge international acclaim from critics and public figures such as Nelson Mandela, Sienna Miller, Will Smith and Goldie Hawn. At the press conference, he told of his huge admiration for the sensitive filmic portrayal that has been presented by the film’s director and thespian of Indian theatre, Feroz Abbas Khan, and producer and Bollywood veteran, Anil Kapoor. Tushar stated: When I first heard that the film was being made, I was a bit anxious, as it delves into such an intimate subject for our family, and there was a fear that it would be exploited. But when I found out that Feroz was making it, I was totally reassured. I never cry in films, but when I saw this one, I wept throughout.

My grandfather, Manilal, was very close to his brother, Harilal, so my family was extremely affected by the issues that the film uncovers. Seeing the film was the first time that I had witnessed how and what happened back in my family’s personal history. It feels like Feroz has shot the film in real time – it is so accurate. There could have been the temptation of Feroz becoming a voyeur into our family affairs, but he has made the film as if he were a part of our family. This film is essential for anybody who believes in family ties and the importance of community. Nowadays, we don’t talk with each other, but to each other. I thank the filmmakers for allowing me to be a part of this creation, and I will be obliged to them forever.

By referring to Gandhi as ‘Mahatma’ (the Great Soul), it is a way of saying that no one can emulate him. This film shows him as a human being, a father, a sensitive man. The strength of this film is that we see Gandhi as a person, in the kinds of situation that every human being faces.”

Gandhi My Father is directed by world-renowned thespian of Indian theatre, Feroz Abbas Khan, on whose acclaimed stage play, Mahatma v/s Gandhi, the film has been based. On deciding to realise such affecting subject matter on film, he described, “Because of the limitations of time and space in theatre, when you enter into a subject of this nature, with so much scope, a stage play is too limiting. What has emerged is something far greater than just a film. There were some people in India that were against the film’s release and, for the first time, I realised how fiery one group of people can become. Five well meaning people based in Patna, who do some very worthwhile work, had heard about the film, they got anxious, and wrote to the prime minister to look into this film, and their anxiety was expressed by the media. You can take their objections as information, rubbish or the democratic right to freedom of speech.”

The film has been produced by prolific Indian film actor, Anil Kapoor, who has a 30-year history of hit films and industry accolades under his belt. On speaking about the film – his first venture into production under his Anil Kapoor Films Company banner - he was compelled to tears, telling, “The story was so moving. My family have never wanted me to produce and I told my wife and kids that I would only produce this film if they said yes to me. Knowing how much it meant to me, they told me to go ahead and make this film.”

When told how Gandhi My Father will raise the profile of Indian cinema across the entire globe, Anil commented, “I have travelled all over the world and seen amazing films from all over, often thinking, why can’t Indian cinema make a film like this, of international standard? That’s the vision that I had for this film, just as I have for all of my future films.”

One of Indian cinema’s finest actors, Akshaye Khanna, has championed his acting career with his deft portrayal of Gandhi’s eldest son, Harilal, and described how it has been his most challenging role to date: “Researching the role was extremely hard, as there is very little material or documentation about Harilal Gandhi, compared to the vast amounts that have been recorded about Bapu (Mahatma Gandhi). My focus was to get a glimpse of the spirit of Harilal Gandhi and his character. I got that glimpse through the letters that I saw, from Harilal to his father, and to his mother, Kasturba. This is a film that spans 42 years of their lives. The underlying emotion is the constant love Harilal and his father share with each other. If you don’t love someone, you don’t keep trying to connect with them, in the way that Gandhi and his son continued to do.”

Gandhi My Father is released and distributed worldwide by Eros International - a film company that is committed to giving Indian cinema a global platform and backing socially relevant films. On discussing Eros’ privilege to be delivering such a phenomenal film on an international level, Jyoti Deshpande, COO and Commercial Director, Eros International commented, “Gandhi My Father is a film that everyone will feel deeply. It has been made with the most amount of passion on the part of everyone that has been involved in its creation. The term ‘labour of love’ has been used tonnes of times, but Gandhi My Father truly is.”

Gandhi My Father is releasing in cinemas worldwide on 3rd August 2007.

JODHAA AKBAR
Historical

CAST:

Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Sonu Sood, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Suhasini Mulay

Jodhaa Akbar is a sixteenth century love story about a marriage of alliance that gave birth to true love between a great Mughal Emperor, Akbar and a Rajput princess, Jodhaa. Politically, success knew no bounds for Emperor Akbar, After having secured the Hindu Kush, he furthered his realm by conquest until his empire extended from Afghanistan to the Bay of Bengal, and from the Himalayas to the Godhavari River. Through a shrewed blend of tolerence, generosity and force, Akbar won the allegiance of the Rajputs, the most belligerent Hindus. But little did Akbar know that when he married Jodhaa, a fiery Rajput princess, in order to further strengthen his relations with the Rajputs, he would in turn be embarking upon a new journey - the journey of true love. The daughter of King Bharmal of Amer, Jodhaa resented being reduced to a mere political pawn in this marriage of alliance, and Akbar's biggest challenge now did not merely lie in winning battles, but in winning the love of Jodhaa - a love hidden deep below resentment and extreme prejudice. Jodhaa Akbar is their untold love story.

YATRA

CAST:

Rekha, Nana Patekar, Nakul Vaid, Deepti Naval, Raima Sen, Romit Raaj, Masood Akhtar, Anandi Ghose

Time and again there have been instances of acclaimed film makers returning with a story that defies the stereotype and give audience something different. National award winner Goutam Ghose is one such director who is back with his film titled 'Yatra'. Though the film had reached the finishing line early this year, the makers opted for the right time before bringing the film to the mainstream theatres.

Film's central protagonist is Dashrath Joglekar [Nana Patekar], who is a writer by profession. He belongs to the Adilabad district in Andhra Pradesh and heads the family of four which comprises of wife [Deepti Naval] and two children [Romit Raj and Anandi]. Though he is loved by his family, his son doesn't really like to read his father's works and is fonder of contemporary music. But at a later stage in his life, a few incidents take shape that make him finally take an interest in his father's work.

Dahsrath is on a train journey to Delhi to receive the prestigious 'Elegant Sahitya Samman' award for his novel 'Janaza'. In the train he meets a co-passenger [Nakul Vaid], a filmmaker who admires his work. The visionary in him feels that the subject like 'Janaza' could make for an interesting film! Now that was quite a possibility since the novel's main protagonist was a beautiful coutesan by the name of Lajvanti.

Though Dashrath and his co-passenger part ways after the train trip, an idea about reconstructing the possibly true story about Lajvanti doesn't go away from Dahsrath. He receives the award but soon finds himself in search of the real muse of his story.

In short, he is off for the 'yatra' of his lifetime.

The old characters from his last novel fail to leave him alone and it doesn't take much time before his own life gets mingled with the characters of his novel. Since Dahsrath doesn't return home for a long time, his wife sets out in his search and finds herself standing at the backstreet home of the dancer.

The dancer is none other than Lajvanti [Rekha], a courtesan - Dahsrath's central protagonist of his work. Lajvanti is a singer-dancer from Benaras-Lucknow who is as enigmatic and mysterious as Dashrath's character. No wonder the writer in Dahsrath becomes obsessed with her.

As per director Ghose himself, "'Yatra' is a multi-layered film with the writer Dashrath traveling from one place to another. There are two layers to the film - the visualization of the filmmaker and imagination of the writer. So, the creative processes of both come to light. The dichotomy between fact and fiction is also depicted because, in any writing, you combine fact with fiction – you base your ideas on things that are real, sometimes unreal and sometimes surreal. It's a combination!"

The film is about how fiction meets the facts; 'Yatra' has some exquisite cinematography and costumes that create a breathtaking world, reverberating with Urdu music. Also today's generation gets a chance to see Rekha in the role of a courtesan, something that she immortalized in 'Umrao Jaan'.

'Yatra' is a superb must-see film, in which award-wining director Goutam Ghose elicits powerful performances from his acclaimed cast. Ghose's sharp scripting and direction gradually build the drama into an electrifying sequence of events where fact and fiction tensely oscillate.

'Yatra' is expected to arrive in the month of November.
