Mela

Time 12pm-6pm

Info
The sixth annual Baishaki Mela celebrating the Bengali New Year will be held. The Baishaki Mela is the largest and most prestigious Bangladeshi festival outside of Bangladesh and is London’s biggest Mela - attracting upwards of 60,000 people from capital, the UK and Europe and is also seen by many thousands more through live broadcasts on satellite TV.

Established in 1998, the Mela taps into the creative and cultural energy of London’s East End focusing on the vibrancy of contemporary Bangladeshi culture through music, dance, food, fashion and street parades. It is a key annual event for the UK’s 550,000 plus Bengalis.

Because of the rapid growth in attendances the 2003 Baishaki Mela site plan has been extended to include Weavers Fields on Valance Road where the main stage will be located along with a funfair, a market and food village. Brick Lane (the heart of London’s Bangladeshi community) will feature street entertainment, food, a cultural programme and the opening parade which kicks off at 11.30am from Allen Gardens and processes to Weavers Field.

Chair of the Baishaki Mela Steering Group, the Lead Member for Leisure for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Councillor Ataur Rahman said today:“The Baishaki Mela has grown from a small local celebration to one of national significance in just 5 years. Crucial to the maintenance and development of this event is the support we receive from public and private sector funders and we are pleased to welcome them all to this years event and thank them all for their support. This is a key event for the local Bangladeshi community both as a point to celebrate their cultural roots and as an opportunity to directly contribute to the regeneration of the Brick Lane area”.

The Respect Festival, a free music and dance event at Hackney's Victoria Park, celebrates multicultural London and makes a stand against racism.

First organised by the Trades Union Congress back in 1996, the festival's aims were short and sharp - to promote anti-racism and celebrate cultural diversity through an eclectic mix of music, exhibitions and displays.

The festival did not take place again until Ken Livingstone was elected Mayor in May 2000 and made a manifesto pledge to host it on an annual basis. The culmination of a week of cultural activities including sport, art, photography, film and slam poetry, it features top music and dance acts as well as an Asian mela, a children's play area, a market, exhibitions, food s and comedy.
