Established in 1998, the Mela taps into the creative and cultural energy of London’s East End focusing on the vibrancy of contemporary Bangladeshi culture through music, dance, food, fashion and street parades. It is a key annual event for the UK’s 550,000 plus Bengalis.

Because of the rapid growth in attendances the 2003 Baishaki Mela site plan has been extended to include Weavers Fields on Valance Road where the main stage will be located along with a funfair, a market and food village. Brick Lane (the heart of London’s Bangladeshi community) will feature street entertainment, food, a cultural programme and the opening parade which kicks off at 11.30am from Allen Gardens and processes to Weavers Field.

Chair of the Baishaki Mela Steering Group, the Lead Member for Leisure for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Councillor Ataur Rahman said today:“The Baishaki Mela has grown from a small local celebration to one of national significance in just 5 years. Crucial to the maintenance and development of this event is the support we receive from public and private sector funders and we are pleased to welcome them all to this years event and thank them all for their support. This is a key event for the local Bangladeshi community both as a point to celebrate their cultural roots and as an opportunity to directly contribute to the regeneration of the Brick Lane area”.

Join in on the Vaisakhi open air multi-cultural event. The festival brings lots of enjoyment among everyone from all communitues, as people forget their differences and enjoy the day together.

As part of the Vaisakhi celebrations on Sunday 25th April 2005, members of the Sikh community will take part in a Nagar Kirtan - a religious march.
