LUTON
Shopping
& Community Guide - Little
Kashmir without the conflict!

When
one of my friends first suggested we spend a day out
in Luton, I was a bit surprised. Luton wasn't exactly
known for its sights, apart from Luton Airport maybe.
The
last time I had been to Luton was in 19
actually
I won't say because I don't want anyone to work out
how old I am, but lets just say it was a long time
ago.
Back
then, the West Side Centre was the coolest part on
town (well my friends and I were eight), had now been
replaced with a supermarket and I couldn't even remember
where Zodiac Toys used to be....
However,
in the places left behind by those old memories in

Birmingham
Birmingham
is best known as being the birthplace of the balti,
but there is a lot more to it than just food.
It
is also the home of Soho Road, made famous by the
song by Apna Sangeet. Soho Road has the Birmingham
Gudawara on one end and is where most of the Indian
/ Punjabi shops are. On the other end are all the
designer boutiques.
And
if you still haven't found what you're looking for,
to quote U2, you can always check out Alum Rock which
is where most of the Pakistani and Kashmiri shops
are.
These are some of the places to go where you can buuy
anything from gold jewellery to antique Indo furniture.

London
If
you want to go shopping, one of the best places to
go is the capital of cool, London. London has developed
a worldwide reputation as being the place to go, outside
the Indian sub-continent, to get the desi flava.
The
first places that people tend to think of when it
comes to checking out the Asian culture in London
is Southall and Green Street in East London. You can
pack a lot in, if you visit either place.
However,
there are lots of other parts of London which are
fast catching up like Tooting in South London and
Ilford.
Put it this way, if you can see it, do it, buy it,
or hire it in London, you can't do it anywhere.

Manchester
The
main desi shopping heart of Manchester is Wimslow
Road which has been dubbed Curry Mile. And when you
go down there, you will soon understand why. The road
is full of restaurants and eateries so there is no
danger of you starving while you check out the shops.
There
are plenty of great shops down there, ranging from
designer boutiques to music shops with the latest
bhangra CD's blaring out.
